1 Samuel 8

Theme of chapter: Samuel was getting old, and he made his sons Judges over Israel. His sons were heathens and cheats. The people of Israel wanted a king like the other nations and demanded of Samuel to get them one. This was Israel's rejection of God as their king.

Most important verse: 1 Samuel 8:7 And the LORD said unto Samuel, Hearken unto the voice of the people in all that they say unto thee: for they have not rejected thee, but they have rejected me, that I should not reign over them.

Most prominent word: king (royal ruler)

Teaching about Christ: Christ is king, high priest, and prophet.

Command to obey: Seek Christ to be the Lord over your everyday life.

Promise to claim: man's heart is infinitely wicked. God sometimes has to take his children to the woodshed for teaching.

New truth learned: The people of Israel now want a king, just because everybody around them has one. They have the one true God, but that isn't what they want, they want a man to rule over them. That is exactly what they are going to get, and that isn't a good thing, as they have rejected God.
