1 Samuel 6

Theme of chapter: The Philistines hastily get the Ark back to Israel as it has brought nothing but pain and suffering to them. Levites receive it but sin against the Lord and look into the Ark. As a result 50,070 people of Israel are killed.

Most important verse: 1 Samuel 6:19 And he smote the men of Bethshemesh, because they had looked into the ark of the LORD, even he smote of the people fifty thousand and threescore and ten men: and the people lamented, because the LORD had smitten many of the people with a great slaughter.

Most prominent word: milch kine (nursing heifer; cow )

Teaching about Christ: Christ is holy.

Command to obey: Fear the Lord, and obey his word.

Promise to claim: Certain judgement comes to unrepentant sin.

New truth learned: The Philistines were glad to get rid of this once prized possession of Israel. It had given them hemorrhoids and killed off a bunch of them. The Levites receive the Ark, but they are obviously still in idolatry as they look into the Ark, I guess out of curiosity sake. This was a direct disobedience of his law, the result is thousands slaughtered. God is to be feared, and out of his will is a bad place to be.
