Theme of chapter: Jephthah defeats Ammon. The tribe of Ephraim was jealous and put to shame that Jephthah hadn't included them in on the battle. They threaten him, and Jephthah wars with Ephraim and defeats them.
Most important verse: Judges 12:3 And when I saw that ye delivered me not, I put my life in my hands, and passed over against the children of Ammon, and the LORD delivered them into my hand: wherefore then are ye come up unto me this day, to fight against me?Most prominent word: shibboleth (head of grain; branches; channel) a word the Ephraimites could now pronounce correctly. Jephthah used it as a test and killed the people when they couldn't pronounce it correctly.
Command to obey: do not be jealous or covet.
New truth learned: The people of Israel are fighting amongst themselves now, showing further weakness in the tribes. The Judges are full of faults, but God continues to raise them up and use them for his purposes.
