Joshua 6

Theme of chapter: Israel falls again into sin and idolatry, resulting in judgement and oppression. They cry out to God, and God raises up Gideon a very meek and somewhat cowardly man.

Most important verse: Joshua 6:11 And there came an angel of the LORD, and sat under an oak which was in Ophrah, that pertained unto Joash the Abiezrite: and his son Gideon threshed wheat by the winepress, to hide it from the Midianites.

12And the angel of the LORD appeared unto him, and said unto him, The LORD is with thee, thou mighty man of valour.

Most prominent word: Jehovahshalom (Lord is peace)

Teaching about Christ: Christ shows he has a sense of humor as he talks with Gideon. Gideon was hiding from the Midianites and Christ calls him 'mighty man of valour'.

Command to obey: do not worship idols and false Gods

Promise to claim: if the Lord is with you, nothing can stand against you.

New truth learned: God uses the least of people to confound the wise of this world. You can't get much meeker than Gideon. A poor farmer who is hiding from the enemy when God finds him and uses him. Gideon has little faith and asks for signs to prove to himself that he is speaking to the one true God.
