Theme of chapter: Jesus heals the crippled man at the pool of Bethesda. The religious leaders find out about and begin to persecute Jesus as he performed this on the Sabbath. Jesus gives more fuel to the fire by telling them many things, including that he is the Son of God and therefore equal to God.
Most important verse: 29 And shall come forth; they that have done good, unto the resurrection of life; and they that have done evil, unto the resurrection of damnation. (there will be two resurrections at the end of the age, one of the saved and the one for the lost and now damned. everybody lives forever, it's just a matter of where)
Most prominent word: verily (amen; the truth) this was said twice in a row by Jesus for emphasis that this was an important truth he was about to reveal.
Teaching about Christ: Jesus is the Son of the living God. Jesus has the power to raise the dead. The Father has given all power of judgement to Jesus. Belief on Jesus grants everlasting life.
Command to obey: the scriptures reveal Christ. Receive him for everlasting life.
Promise to claim: Jesus came as a savior the first time. The next time he comes as judge.
New truth learned: Jesus speaks of the Antichrist, as he talks about that he has come in the Father's name and the people don't receive him, and that one will come in his own name and the people will receive him. Jesus also hits at the religious rulers hard when he spoke that if they believed Moses they would have believed him, because Moses wrote about him.
