John 3

Theme of chapter: Nicodemus a Pharisee and a ruler of the Jews, came to Jesus one night with many questions. Jesus sets him straight on salvation. John the Baptist's ministry is ending as Jesus' is ramping up.

Most important verse: John 3:36 He that believeth on the Son hath everlasting life: and he that believeth not the Son shall not see life; but the wrath of God abideth on him. (the Liberal will quote John 3:16, and completely bypass 36 which states if you don't have Christ then all you have is the wrath of God on you.)

John 3:14 And as Moses lifted up the serpent in the wilderness, even so must the Son of man be lifted up: (the serpent represented sin in the old testament, all who gazed upon it were cleansed. just as Jesus was made sin for us and was lifted up on a cross)

Most prominent word: wrath (anger; vengeance)

Teaching about Christ: Christ taught that you had to be born again to see the kingdom of God. You had to be born of the spirit.

Command to obey: take the free gift of salvation to avoid the coming wrath of God.

Promise to claim: trusting in Christ gets you to heaven not works.

New truth learned: Lost people go around thinking they are doing good enough, and someday there will be a trial and they will be vindicated with their so-called good works and go to heaven. What they don't realize is they are already condemned in their sin and in prison on death row. The only way out is a pardon from Christ, which they have to accept before the day of execution comes.
